What is TMJ Disorder?

TMJ disorder, or temporomandibular joint disorder, occurs when the joints that connect your jaw to your skull become strained, inflamed, or misaligned. This condition can cause jaw pain, stiffness, headaches and migraines, popping or clicking sounds, and even difficulty opening or closing your mouth. TMJ disorder can be the result of bruxism, also known as teeth grinding, and it can lead to wear and tear on the enamel layer of your teeth. It’s also tied to bite imbalances; an improper bite places excess strain on the joints, causing discomfort.
Symptoms of TMJ Disorder

TMJ disorder can cause a variety of uncomfortable symptoms that impact your daily life! These include:
- Persistent jaw pain or tenderness, especially when biting or chewing
- Facial soreness or tension, including neck pain
- Frequent headaches, migraines, and earaches
- Clicking, popping, or grinding sounds when you open or close your mouth
- The sensation that your jaw becomes “locked” in an open or closed position
Since these symptoms can vary in severity, it’s important to recognize them early so that you can seek treatment and quickly get relief.
BOTOX Injections

BOTOX offers an effective, minimally invasive solution for relieving the tension and pain caused by TMJ problems. Relaxing overactive and strained jaw muscles greatly helps to reduce clenching, grinding, and discomfort, as well as symptoms like headaches, migraines, and associated facial pain. Better yet, the process is quite quick and gentle and can be completed during a single visit, and many patients notice a dramatic improvement within days.
Occlusal Splints

Occlusal splints, sometimes called nightguards, are custom-made appliances designed to relieve the symptoms of TMJ disorder. Worn over the teeth when you go to bed, these splints help to reduce jaw tension, prevent teeth grinding and clenching, and promote proper jaw alignment. By minimizing stress on the jaw joints and muscles, these splints can significantly decrease associated pain, stiffness, headaches, and other symptoms. Dr. Leezer and our team take the time to carefully design each splint to ensure that it fits comfortably and functions perfectly to help you achieve long-term relief.
